The Pennsylvania legislature has authorized the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) to address local taxation issues as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. DCED is tasked with working with local governments to ensure that all local tax filing and payment deadlines are consistent with the state deadlines for personal income tax, which have been extended to July 15, 2020. (On March 21, the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue extended the Pennsylvania state personal income tax deadline to July 15, 2020.)
In addition, penalties and interest for local taxes due will not apply for periods between April 15, 2020 and July 15, 2020. This special authorization from DCED is welcomed and addresses taxpayer concerns related to Pennsylvania local taxes. The provisions of the bill will expire on July 31, 2020. Berkheimer, Jordan Tax Service, Keystone Collections and the City of Pittsburgh have each issued notice, on their respective websites, addressing the local income tax extension until July 15, 2020.
